Stay at Home Mom Jobs

I’m sure many of you who have researched jobs for stay at home moms have found a lot of different ads that appear to be scams. Well, from mom to mom (or dad), I’ll tell you what I know. I’ve been staying at home for 2 years and have researched many stay at home jobs. I have a good idea as to which are scams and which are legitimate jobs. Just a note of wisdom: No job is easy, even jobs from home.

Virtual Assistant

I am currently a virtual assistant for a popular coupon blog. My job is to write blog posts for her as a ghostwriter (meaning I do not get credit for the posts, just paid by the hour). The task of a virtual assistant is totally up to the blog owner, so you might be hired to do something else and not write blog posts. It is helpful if you know a little bit about WordPress, plugins, or at least blogging.

How did I find this job? My friend hooked me up. In a world where I am not the biggest fan of how networking seems to be the only way to get a job, this time it worked in my favor. If you do not know any bloggers, I suggest you ask on legitimate forums or email bloggers to see if they are hiring. There are several job boards online (I’ll make a list of them soon).

Direct Selling

One of the most growing and popular companies that I’m aware of is Thirty-One Gifts. My son’s birth board is all about Thirty One Gifts (you ladies are reading this, aren’t you?). :) I’ve though about working for them but you have to sell a certain amount of products every 3 months. Although I’ve heard that it is easy to obtain the dollar amount. You can have online parties also. Besides Thirty One Gifts, there is Mary Kay and a lot more direct selling companies.

So if you are interested in selling a product, here are list of companies:

Thirty One Gifts

Mary Kay

Avon

Mia Bella Candles

La Bella Baskets

Pampered Chef

Tupperware

Writing

If you are not interested in selling, you could write. The problem with writing is that many companies like Examiner.com and Suite101 pay you based on the amount of pageviews. You could also find a writing position directly with a blogger or website and write content and be paid by the post or hour.

Another option is to start your own blog. However, it takes time to build up an income. There is also the possibility that you won’t make much at all. Bloggers make money by selling private ad space, belonging to an ad network, and earning money via affiliate revenue. It has taken me a year to learn the ins and outs, and I’m still learning. Am I making enough to substitute a job right now? No way. Am I earning more than I did last year? Yes. I would like to think slow and steady wins the race! You have to love blogging to keep up with it.

Selling Your Own Product

Another way to make money is to open your own eBay or Etsy store. Craigslist is an option. There have been plenty of success stories doing that.

Affiliate Marketing

If you don’t have anything to sell, this is where affiliate/internet marketing comes into play and you can sell items online. Being an Amazon Affiliate is a good place to start.

Google Rater

You could also work as a Google rater. I worked for Leapforce for a few weeks before being let go. Due to confidentiality agreements, I can not discuss it much. However, you can find a few companies that have similar jobs such as this. The WAHM forums also discusses Leapforce and other rating companies. They were a legitimate company and did pay me.

There are other options than working from home. Can you have someone babysit your child once a week or so? Many school districts hire substitute teachers. In the county I work in, you can pretty much choose and pick what days you want to work if there is a job available.

Medical Transcriptionist- There are tons of scams out there advertising this job. However, there are also REAL medical transcriptionist jobs. I suggest you start researching about the medical transcriptionist field here  to see what educational requirements you need. A company that offers this position without requiring certain educational requirements might not be legitimate. So do your research!

Web Designer: Even if you know how to create a blot button or header, you can sell your services even if you don’t know how to create a full web design. Market yourself online and trying to establish a business selling your web creations!

Write: There are several routes to go with this. You can write for Suite101, Examiner, and other similar companies. However, there is no quick cash and it takes time to get money. You could also become a writer for someone online and get paid per post. WarriorForum.com and there is a forum on ProBlogger.net where people are looking to hire writers by the post.

  1. What does a Google Rater do? I haven’t heard of that one. I am currently writing after taking a long break – I have always loved to write but getting money out of page views can be confusing and frustrating at times but as time goes on I am getting better and better about writing for my audience :)
