Pre-K Lesson Plan: Week 3

Posted September 18, 2011 under Pre-K Lesson Plans, Preschool Lesson Plans

Here is the pre-k lesson for week 3.

Focus on the Letter of the Week

This week we are going to focus on the letter C.

Teach your child the long and short sounds the letter C makes.

All week, point out things around the house or in public that start with the letter C.

Recognize which is a uppercase C and a lowercase C.

Trace the uppercase and lowercase letter C on paper.

You can find practice tracing letter B worksheets here.

Your Child Should Learn His Birthday

This week, it is important for him to learn his birthday if he does not already. Actually, each week you should start focusing on techniques for him to remember his month, day, and year of his birth. I believe when many 4-5 year olds attend Kindergarten screening, they must know their birthday.

Learning His Phone Number and Address

Over the next few weeks, your child should start learning her phone number and address. My son’s pre-k teacher suggested having your child sing the phone number to remember it. Whatever works. I started working with my son last year to remember our phone number and every night before we would go to bed we would talk about “the world” like our phone number, where we live, or as my son likes to refer to everything “the earth”.

Work on Your Child’s First Name

Your child should start working on writing his name correctly. For example, if your child can already write his name in all capitalized letters, he needs to learn that only the first letter of his name is capitalized.

Using Scissors

Your child should practice using child safety scissors every day. I found this worksheet that can help your child learn to cut on the line.

Coloring

Here are several worksheets that deal with the letter C. I usually pick a few a week to do. I suggest you focus on one a day.

If you do not want to spend time searching and printing, there are several pre-k workbooks online to purchase. Make sure you get a pre-k book because some of the “preschool” books might be geared towards younger children.

Math

The first 2 weeks we focused on patterns. Now it is time to focus on short and long.

Activity

Last week I asked you to get a scrapbook or something that can be used like a scrapbook? Did you do that? We will talk about the scrapbook later this week. The activity for the week is to take your child to the grocery store. If you have not noticed yet, my activity section is actually field trips. Next week I am going to change the title. :) When you go to the grocery store, your goal is to find items in the store that start with the letter C! You can do this during your regular shopping trip of course.

Language/Music

This section is probably the most difficult one to come up with because it really depends on what you want to do. This week I think it is a good idea to find a song that your child can sing along with. This helps with your child’s memory also!

Christian Teachings

If you are a Christian, here is the lesson for the week.

Four Good Friends: Mark 2, Luke 5, Matt 9

Bible Verse: A friend loves at all times, Prov. 17:17.

Halloween Craft Pre-K Lesson Plan

I absolutely love doing crafts for pre-k lessons. Today’s home preschool lesson plan was to do a Halloween craft activity. Yesterday we went to Michael’s Craft Store and purchased a 3d foam kit to build a spooky house. So, how is this beneficial for preschoolers?

This foam kit is great for little ones to practice using their fingers and brain! :) It requires them to use glue, build pieces together like a puzzle, and requires them to think. It’s like putting a 3d puzzle together. It is definitely good for hand coordination!

Week 2

Focus on the Letter of the Week

This week we are going to focus on the letter B.

Teach your child the long and short sounds the letter B makes.

All week, point out things around the house or in public that start with the letter B.

Recognize which is a uppercase B and a lowercase B.

Trace the uppercase and lowercase letter B on paper.

You can find practice tracing letter B worksheets here.

Coloring

There are a lot of fun activities online that you can print. Since we are working with the letter B, the goal is to find worksheets associated with the letter B.

If you do not want to spend time searching and printing, there are several pre-k workbooks online to purchase. Make sure you get a pre-k book because some of the “preschool” books might be geared towards younger children.

Math

Your child should be counting and learning their basic numbers if they do not know them already. This week we will focus on patterns and sorting numbers again. Here are some examples of what I mean by sorting numbers and patterns:

You can find a printable here.

Activity

Last week’s activity was to take your child to the library. Did you have fun doing that? If not, what did you do?

This week, your goal is to take your child on an outing to a craft store. Oh that sounds like fun, doesn’t it?! I love scrapbooking. Most children at this age like coloring or doing some sort of craft activity. How about make a scrapbook of your child for this school year? Each week, your child can add a page to the scrapbook. We will talk about that in future lessons. If you are unable to purchase anything at this time, you could use any basic supplies to make a homemade scrapbook. Use a folder or notebook. The dollar store is also an idea!

Language/Music

Last week I asked you to pick a music or language activity for you to do at home with your child. If you have not found anything yet to do, there are many things you could do. This week, why don’t you take a look at these preschool songs.

Christian Teachings

If you are a Christian and would like to include a Bible unit into your preschool teachings, here is the unit for the week:

A Snake in the Garden, Genesis 3

Bible Verse: God Created Us in His Image, Genesis 1:27

Pre-K Lesson Plan: Week 1

Posted September 6, 2011 under Pre-K Lesson Plans, Preschool Lesson Plans

The first week of preschool/pre-k, teachers are preparing children for the school year. They spend this time teaching the rules and getting the children adjusted to the classroom. For the purpose of this series, we are jumping right in since many of you will be using this lesson at home. These lessons are designed for children that are ages 4 and 5. Remember, the entire goal and purpose of preschool/pre-kindergarten is to prepare them for Kindergarten besides the fact they have growing minds. :)

Week 1

Focus on the Letter of the Week

This week we are going to start with the letter A.

Teach your child the long and short sounds the letter A makes.

All week, point out things around the house or in public that start with the letter A.

Recognize which is a uppercase A and a lowercase A.

Trace the uppercase and lowercase letter A on paper.

You can find practice letter tracing sheets here that look like the picture below.

Coloring

There are a lot of fun activities online that you can print. Since we are working with the letter A, the goal is to find worksheets associated with the letter A. Here is a picture of an ant your child can color. However, there are several other fun worksheets online you can find.

If you do not want to spend time searching and printing, there are several pre-k workbooks online to purchase. Make sure you get a pre-k book because some of the “preschool” books might be geared towards younger children.

Math

Your child should be counting and learning their basic numbers if they do not know them already. This week we will focus on patterns and sorting numbers.

Activity

Each week I’m going to post an activity suggestion. Of course you might not be able to do each and every activity I suggest. Feel free to brainstorm your own idea. The activity should be something that is educational and fun for your child.

This week, your goal is to take your child to the library. Allow them to pick any book (with your permission of course). If possible, see if you can get your child a library card and allow them to check out the book at the desk. My library does this. It prepares your child for Kindergarten.

Language/Music

If you know another language, this is a good time to add that language to your child’s vocabulary. In my son’s pre-k class, they are learning spanish. They also go to music class. Now at home, it might be more difficult to choose one of these (or both) activities to do. However, the goal for you this week is to pick a activity in the music or language category for them to do. This is entirely up to you. The goal is to expose your child to culture.

Christian Teachings

If you are a Christian and would like to include a Bible unit into your preschool teachings, here is the unit for the week:

Abraham’s Prayer taken from Genesis 15, 18, 21.

Bible Verse: God Keeps His Promise taken from Romans 4:21
